Francesco Hayez (born February 10, 1791, in Venice; died December 21, 1882, in Milan) was a very important Italian painter. He was the main artist of a style called Romanticism in the mid-19th century in Milan. He is most famous for his large historical paintings and excellent portraits of people.
Francesco Hayez came from a family that wasn't very rich in Venice. His father, Giovanni, was from France, and his mother, Chiara Torcella, was from Murano. Francesco was the youngest of five sons.
