Life and Work
Francesco was the son of Giampietro Zanotti. He also learned from a scholar named Eustachio Manfredi.
In 1718, Francesco became a professor of philosophy at the University of Bologna. Later, in 1723, he worked as a secretary for Luigi Ferdinando Marsigli.
At first, Zanotti followed the ideas of a philosopher named Descartes. But later, he became a big supporter of Isaac Newton's scientific ideas. In 1728, a scientist named Francesco Algarotti even did light experiments in Zanotti's lab. They copied Newton's famous prism experiments.
In 1741, Zanotti became a Fellow of the Royal Society. This is a very important group for scientists. That same year, he wrote about how ideas connect in our minds. He believed this was similar to how forces work in Newton's physics.
In 1766, he became the president of the Institute of Science in Bologna. This shows how respected he was in the world of science.
