Francine Faure (born December 6, 1914, in Oran, Algeria – died December 24, 1979) was a talented French pianist and a skilled mathematician. She was best known as the second wife of the famous writer Albert Camus.

Francine and Albert met in 1937 in Algiers. They got married in Lyon, France, on December 3, 1940. Francine came from a middle-class French family in Oran, which was a French colony at the time. She also taught mathematics, sometimes working as a substitute teacher.

Early Life and Family

Francine's father, Fernand Martial François Faure, sadly died during World War I. He passed away at the First Battle of the Marne, which is also where Albert Camus's father died.

Her mother was Marie-Fernande Charlotte Faure. Francine's grandfather helped build parts of the harbor in Oran. Her maternal grandmother, Clara Albert, was a Berber Jewish woman born in Oran.

Life with Albert Camus

Francine and Albert Camus had twin children, Catherine and Jean Camus. They were born in Paris in 1945, after the city was freed from occupation during World War II.

Francine had moved to Paris from Algeria. She had been separated from Albert for two years while he was involved in the French resistance movement.

People described Francine as having a striking beauty. She was also known for being reserved, humble, and gentle.

Francine faced some difficult personal challenges during her life. Despite these challenges, Albert Camus wrote in a letter that he was touched by her generosity and that he had always loved her. He also mentioned that she had "forgiven" him.

Francine Faure and Albert Camus are buried together in a place called Lourmarin.
