Francis Columbine was an important officer in the British Army. He also served as the Governor of Gibraltar for a short time. He died on September 22, 1746.

Early Military Career

Francis Columbine began his military career serving in the War of the Spanish Succession. This was a big conflict during the time of Queen Anne. He served under a famous general named John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough.

For many years, Columbine was an officer in the 8th Regiment of Foot. A regiment is a large group of soldiers. He worked his way up through the ranks in this group. He eventually became a major.

Rising Through the Ranks

Later, Francis Columbine was promoted again. He became a lieutenant-colonel in the 10th Regiment of Foot. He was the commanding officer of this regiment for over twelve years. He made sure his soldiers were well-trained and ready for duty.

He continued to advance in the army. On October 29, 1735, he became a major-general. This is a very high rank. Then, on January 27, 1737, he was given command of his own regiment. His final promotion was to lieutenant-general on July 2, 1739.

Governor of Gibraltar

After his long military career, Francis Columbine took on a new role. He became the Governor of Gibraltar. This is a British territory located at the southern tip of Spain. He served as governor for six months. His time as governor was from October 1739 to April 1740.

Today, if you visit Gibraltar, you can find a place named after him. Cathedral Square is located where a street once existed. That street was known as Columbine Street.
