Francis Jones was a successful merchant in London. A merchant was someone who bought and sold goods, often trading with other countries. He was also a member of a special group called the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers. This was a guild for people who sold small items like needles, thread, and ribbons.
He held many important jobs in London. On July 18, 1610, he was chosen as an alderman for the City of London. An alderman was a senior member of the city's government.
From 1610 to 1611, he was the Sheriff of London. The Sheriff helped to keep law and order in the city. During the same time, he was also the Master of the Haberdashers Company. He was chosen as Master again in 1613-1614 and 1616-1617.
In 1617, he was given the title of "Sir" when he was knighted. This was a special honor given by the King. In 1620, he reached the highest position: he was elected Lord Mayor of London. He also served as Master of the Haberdashers Company again from 1620 to 1621.
His Family Life
Sir Francis Jones was the son of John Jones, who lived in a place called Cleverley in Shropshire. Sir Francis was married twice. With his first wife, he had three sons and one daughter.
His family lived in London, but they also had a country home. In 1618, he bought a large estate called Welford Park in Berkshire. This was a beautiful place where his family could enjoy the countryside.
