Sir Francis Graham Moon, 1st Baronet (born October 28, 1796 – died October 13, 1871) was an important English businessman. He was famous for selling and publishing art prints. He also served as the Lord Mayor of London, a very important role in the city.
Life of Sir Francis Moon
Francis Moon was born in a place called St Andrew, Holborn, in London. His father, Christopher Moon, was a skilled gold and silver smith.
Moon started his career as a print seller. He bought several shops in London in the 1820s. These shops were near the Royal Exchange buildings. He became one of the top print publishers in London. Many famous artists, like David Wilkie and David Roberts, asked him to publish their works.
In 1831, Moon joined the Common Council of the City of London. This group helped manage the City of London. Later, in 1843, he became one of the Sheriffs of the City of London. Sheriffs are important officials who help with legal and ceremonial duties.
He also served as an alderman for different areas of London. In 1854, he reached a very high position. He became the Lord Mayor of London. This is like being the main leader of the City of London.
As Lord Mayor, he showed a friendly approach to other countries. In 1855, he welcomed the French Emperor, Napoleon III, and his wife, Empress Eugenie. He hosted them at the Guildhall, a historic building in London. Because of this, he received a special award from France. It was called the Chevalier de la Légion d'honneur.
On May 4, 1855, he was given a special title. He became a baronet. This is a title of honour that can be passed down in a family. Moon also led two old trade groups. He was Master of the Stationers' Company from 1854 to 1855. He was also Master of the Loriners' Company from 1855 to 1856.
Sir Francis Moon passed away on October 13, 1871. He was 74 years old. He was buried in the churchyard of St. Mary's Church, Fetcham, in Surrey. His son, Edward, was a rector at that church.
Sir Francis Moon's Family
Sir Francis Moon married Anne Chancellor on October 28, 1818. They had four sons and four daughters together.
His son, Edward Graham Moon, was a rower and a clergyman. Edward inherited his father's baronet title. Through his marriage to Anne, Sir Francis Moon was also related to famous architects. These included Frederic Chancellor and F. G. M. Chancellor.
