Francis Tsai (born April 14, 1967 – died April 23, 2015) was a talented American artist. He created amazing art for comic books, video games, and even popular card games like Magic: The Gathering. He was also an illustrator and author. Francis had both Taiwanese and Japanese family roots.

Early Life
Francis Tsai was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, and grew up in Lubbock, Texas. He first studied chemistry, then earned a degree in architecture.
His Amazing Art Career
Francis Tsai started his art career in 1998 at Presto Studios. He helped design visuals for video games like Myst 3 and Star Trek: Hidden Evil. In 2003, he joined High Moon Studios. There, he was a main concept artist for games such as The Bourne Conspiracy and Darkwatch.
Tsai also drew many cards for the popular Magic: The Gathering card game.
In 2009, Tsai worked on a five-issue comic book series called Tracker. It was made for Top Cow Productions. A sneak peek was shown at ComicCon that year.
Working with Marvel Comics
Francis Tsai also drew covers and inside art for Marvel Comics. He created artwork for Secret Identities: The Asian American Superhero Anthology. He also worked on Mercy Thompson: Homecoming, a comic book series. This series became very popular, reaching number eight on the Comics Bestsellers list in October 2009.
Dungeons & Dragons Art
Tsai drew many pictures for Dungeons & Dragons manuals. These were for Wizards of the Coast, the company that makes the game. Some of the books he worked on include Sharn: City of Towers, Monster Manual III, and Drow of the Underdark. He also created the art for the Dungeons & Dragons 4th edition Dungeon Masters Screen.
TV and Film Work
Francis Tsai helped create visuals for TV shows and movies. He made concept art for commercials like Gatorade "Inside Crosby". He also worked on the movie TMNT - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Tsai also contributed to Tracker, a miniseries about an FBI agent who turns into a werewolf.
Books and Magazines
Francis was a regular artist for ImagineFX magazine. He taught workshops there on topics like character design and game art.

Overcoming Challenges: Art with ALS
In 2010, when he was 42, Francis Tsai was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This disease, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, affects how the brain controls muscles. It made it hard for him to move his arms and hands. By early 2011, he could no longer hold a pencil.
But Francis didn't give up! He found a new way to create art. He learned to paint digitally on his cellphone using his right big toe. He would hold the phone with his left foot. When he could no longer move his feet, he started using special eye-gaze technology. This allowed him to draw using only his eyes with programs like Sketchup and Photoshop. His eye-gaze art was shown in the media, including CNN and ImagineFX magazine.
Personal Life
Francis Tsai met his wife, Linda, when they were studying architecture at the University of Texas. They lived in Austin, Texas. Francis passed away on April 23, 2015.
