Who Was Francisco Hurtado del Pino?

Francisco Hurtado del Pino was a Spanish colonial officer. This means he was a government official from Spain who worked in the lands that Spain had taken control of. His main role was to manage and govern a specific area.

Becoming the First Intendant of Chiloé

In 1784, Francisco Hurtado del Pino was given a very important job. He became the first Intendant of Chiloé. An Intendant was like a governor who had a lot of power over the local government, money, and military in their region. Chiloé is a group of islands off the coast of what is now southern Chile.

He was the only person to ever hold this specific title for Chiloé. His time as Intendant lasted for five years, from 1784 to 1789.

Mapping Chiloé with José de Moraleda

During his time as Intendant, Francisco Hurtado del Pino worked with other important people. In 1786, the Viceroy of Peru, Teodoro de Croix, sent a navy officer named José de Moraleda y Montero to Chiloé. A Viceroy was a very high-ranking official who ruled a large area, like a king's representative.

José de Moraleda's job was to help Hurtado del Pino create accurate maps of the Chiloé islands. These maps were very important for understanding the land and for planning how to govern it. Moraleda stayed in Chiloé for a long time, until 1796. This was many years after Hurtado del Pino's term as Intendant had ended.

After Hurtado del Pino's Term

When Francisco Hurtado del Pino's time as Intendant ended in 1789, the position of Intendant of Chiloé was removed. It was decided that this specific job was no longer needed.

After the Intendancy was abolished, a new person took charge of the affairs in Chiloé. This was a lieutenant colonel named Francisco Garos. A lieutenant colonel is a military rank, showing that Garos was an army officer who then took on a leadership role in the government of Chiloé.
