Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza (born October 12, 1918 – died July 18, 2000) was a famous Spanish architect. He was very important in the modernist movement in Spain, which means he helped create new and exciting ways to design buildings.

Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza was born in a town called Cáseda in Navarre, Spain. He went to school in Seville and later studied architecture in Madrid.

After a trip to the United States to learn more about architecture, he came back to Madrid in 1949. There, he started teaching at the School of Architecture. He even became the director of the school later on!

He received many important awards in Spain for his amazing work. These included the National Architecture Award (which he won twice, in 1946 and 1954), the Gold Medal for Architecture (in 1989), and the Prince of Asturias Award (in 1993). These awards show how much his work was valued.

Many people think Sáenz de Oiza was one of the most important Spanish architects in the second half of the 20th century. He passed away in Madrid in 2000 after battling cancer.

His Famous Buildings

Francisco Javier Sáenz de Oiza designed many interesting buildings. One of his most famous projects is the Torres Blancas building in Madrid. This tall apartment and office building is 71 meters high. It was built between 1964 and 1969. The outside of the building has round shapes and balconies that stick out.

Other important buildings he designed include:

  • The Arantzazu Basilica in Oñati.
  • The Torre Triana administrative building in Seville.
  • The Spanish embassy in Brussels.
  • The Public University of Navarra in Pamplona.
  • The remodelling of an old palace in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, which became the Atlantic Center of Modern Art.
  • The Banco de Bilbao Tower in Madrid.
