Francisco Javier Winthuysen y Pineda was a brave Spanish naval officer. He was born in El Puerto de Santa María, Spain, in 1747. He became famous for his courage and leadership at sea. Sadly, he died in battle near Cape St. Vincent in 1797.

Fighting for Spain

During the Anglo-Spanish War, Winthuysen fought against Britain. This war was part of the larger American Revolutionary War. He sailed with the Spanish fleet near the coast of Galicia. He also fought in battles off the American coast. In one of these battles, he was seriously injured and lost an arm.

Key Battles and Sacrifice

Winthuysen also took part in the Great Siege of Gibraltar. This was a long and difficult siege where Spanish and French forces tried to capture Gibraltar from the British.

Later in his career, he became a squadron commander. This meant he was in charge of a group of warships. In 1797, he was serving on a ship called the San José. He fought bravely at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent. During this fierce naval battle, Francisco Javier Winthuysen was killed in action. He died serving his country.
