Francisco de Paula Leite de Sousa, Viscount of Veiros (1747–1833) was an important Portuguese military officer. He was known for being a commander whom Wellington, a famous British general, trusted greatly. Many British writers who met Leite during the war spoke highly of him.

Peninsular War

The Peninsular War was a big conflict that took place in Portugal and Spain between 1807 and 1814. It was part of the larger Napoleonic Wars. During this time, France, led by Napoleon Bonaparte, fought against Spain, Portugal, and the United Kingdom.

Battle of Évora (1808)

In 1807, French forces invaded Portugal. General Junot, a French commander, wanted to secure his supply routes. He also needed a clear path to retreat if his army had to leave Lisbon. So, he sent General Loison with a strong group of over 7,000 soldiers. This group included infantry, cavalry, and cannons.

On July 29, 1808, Loison's forces arrived at Évora, a city in Portugal. To his surprise, General Leite was ready to fight them in the open. Leite had gathered about 3,000 men. These included Portuguese infantry and cavalry, along with Spanish soldiers and Hussars. Many local farmers and citizens also helped defend the city walls.

Even though Leite's forces were defeated at Évora, Wellington still had great faith in him. For the winter of 1809-1810, Wellington planned to give Leite a very important job. Leite was put in charge of Elvas, Portugal's strongest fortress. He commanded a large group of soldiers there, which grew to 8,000 men by 1810. This force included regular soldiers and militia.
