Francisco de Paula Linares Alcántara (born April 13, 1825 – died November 30, 1878) was a very important person in Venezuelan history. He served as the President of Venezuela from 1877 to 1878. He was also a member of the Liberal Party of Venezuela, a political group that believed in certain freedoms and changes for the country.

Early Life and Family

Francisco Linares Alcántara was born on April 13, 1825. His hometown was Turmero, which is in the Aragua state of Venezuela.

His father was General Francisco de Paula Alcántara. He was a brave soldier and a hero of the Venezuelan War of Independence. This was a big war where Venezuela fought to become free from Spanish rule. Francisco's mother was Trinidad Linares.

Later in his life, Francisco Linares Alcántara married Belén Esteves Yánes. She became the First Lady of Venezuela when he became president. This was from 1877 to 1878.

A Life in Politics and Military

Francisco Linares Alcántara started his career as a soldier in 1846. He fought in several important battles and uprisings. For example, he fought during the rebellions led by Ezequiel Zamora and Francisco Rangel.

Venezuela had a lot of political problems between 1847 and 1858. During this time, Alcántara worked to protect the government. He served under the presidents Jose Tadeo Monagas and Jose Gregorio Monagas.

By 1854, he became a representative for the state of Aragua. He joined the National Congress, which is like the country's parliament. He then fought again in the Federal War (1858-1863). He also joined forces with Antonio Guzman Blanco to support the Liberal cause between 1868 and 1870.

Becoming President

Alcántara was chosen as president in February 1877. His time as president was known for its liberal ideas. These ideas included:

  • Giving more freedom to the different states in Venezuela.
  • Offering political amnesties, which meant forgiving people who had committed political crimes.
  • Increasing freedom of the press, allowing newspapers to publish more freely.
