Becoming President
In 1846, a powerful former president named José Antonio Páez chose Monagas to be the candidate for the Conservative Party. Páez thought he could control Monagas easily. However, Monagas started to agree more with the Liberal Party.
He eventually dismissed the Congress, which is like the country's main law-making group. In 1848, Páez led a rebellion against Monagas. But Monagas's forces, led by General Santiago Mariño, defeated Páez. Páez was then put in prison and later sent out of the country.
Important Changes as President
As a member of the Liberal Party, José Tadeo Monagas made several big changes. He stopped the death penalty for people who committed crimes related to politics.
The Liberal Party also passed laws that ended slavery in Venezuela. They also made it easier for more people to vote. Plus, they put limits on how much interest banks could charge on loans. José Tadeo Monagas also supported his brother, José Gregorio Monagas, to become president after him.
The Monagas Family Rule
José Tadeo Monagas and his brother, José Gregorio Monagas, ruled Venezuela together from 1847 to 1858. This period is often called the Monagas Dynasty or "Monagato."
During José Tadeo's second time as president, the brothers tried to change the rules. They wanted to get rid of term limits, meaning a president could serve as many times as they wanted. They also wanted to make presidential terms longer, up to six years. However, these plans did not work out. Instead, José Tadeo was removed from power by Julián Castro and his allies from both the Liberal and Conservative parties.
Personal Life
José Tadeo Monagas was married to Luisa Oriach Ladrón de Guevara. She was the First Lady of Venezuela during his two terms. She served from 1847 to 1851 and again from 1855 to 1858.
