Francisco Manuel Rui-Gómez y Dañobeitia, 5th Marquess of San Isidro (born September 28, 1804 – died August 5, 1885) was an important person in Spanish history. He was a nobleman, an army officer, a politician, and a thinker. He fought for the Liberals during the Carlist Wars. Later, he became a Senator for León and even a Senator for life starting in 1864.
Early Life and Family History
Francisco Manuel María Wenceslao Rui-Gómez y Dañobeitia was born in A Coruña, Spain. His family was one of the most important noble families in León. His father, Francisco de Paula Rui-Gómez y de Prado, was the 4th Marquess of San Isidro. At the time Francisco Manuel was born, his father was a high-ranking officer in the Royal Spanish Armies.
The title of Marquess of San Isidro was first given to his ancestor, Pablo Rui-Gómez Lasso de la Vega y Balmaseda, in 1730. King Philip V gave him this title. It was a way to thank him for supporting the Basílica of San Isidoro in León.
A Career in Politics
Francisco Manuel Rui-Gómez was a key figure in Spanish politics. He was part of the Liberals, a group that believed in certain freedoms and changes for Spain. He played a role in the Carlist Wars, which were a series of civil wars in Spain. These wars were fought between different groups who wanted different people to be king.
After his military service, he became a Senator. He represented the Province of León in the Senate. Later, he was appointed a Senator for life in 1864. This meant he could serve in the Senate for the rest of his life. He served under Queens Isabella II and Alfonso XII.
Family Life
Francisco Manuel Rui-Gómez married María del Carmen de Riobóo y Roldán. She was also known as the Countess of Taboada. Sadly, she passed away in 1839.
They had one child together:
- Nicolás María Rui-Gómez y Riobóo (1830–1869). He later married his cousin, Francisca de Riobóo y Álvarez.
