Francisco Mendoza de Bobadilla (born September 25, 1508 – died December 1, 1566) was an important Spanish leader in the Roman Catholic Church. He became a Cardinal, which is a very high-ranking official, similar to a prince of the Church.

Early Life and Education

Francisco Mendoza de Bobadilla was born in Cuenca, a city in Spain. His father was Diego Hurtado de Mendoza. He was the first Marquis of Cañete and served as the Viceroy of Navarre. This was during the time of King Charles V.

Francisco was a very smart student. He studied at two famous universities in Spain. These were the University of Alcalá de Henares and the University of Salamanca. After finishing his studies, he became a teacher. He taught at Salamanca, and also in Évora and Coimbra, which are cities in Portugal.

Becoming a Church Leader

In 1533, Francisco Mendoza de Bobadilla was chosen to be the bishop of Coria. A bishop is a senior member of the Christian clergy. He was given special permission for this role. This was because he had not yet reached the usual age of 27 for a bishop.

Later, on December 19, 1544, he was made a Cardinal by Pope Paul III. A Cardinal is a very important advisor to the Pope. He was given the title of a "Cardinal priest" of a church in Rome called Santa Maria in Aracoeli.

Papal Conclave and New Roles

Francisco Mendoza de Bobadilla took part in a special meeting in 1549–1550. This meeting was called a Papal conclave. During a conclave, Cardinals gather to elect a new Pope.

After the new Pope, Pope Julius III, was chosen, Francisco received new honors. In 1550, he was given the title of Cardinal of S. Eusebio. On June 27, 1550, he was promoted to lead the Diocese of Burgos in Spain. An archbishop oversees a larger area of churches.

Life at Court and Later Years

Francisco Mendoza de Bobadilla spent a lot of time at the Spanish royal court. The court was where the king and his advisors lived and worked. King Philip II of Spain sent him on several important missions. These missions likely involved diplomacy or church matters.

Francisco Mendoza de Bobadilla passed away in 1566. He died in Arcos de la Llana, a town near Burgos.
