Francisco Milans del Bosch (born 1769, died 1834) was an important Spanish general. He is known for his military service in several wars, including the War of the Pyrenees and the Peninsular War. He also played a role in Spanish politics, supporting liberal ideas.

Early Military Career

Francisco Milans del Bosch joined the Spanish army when he was young. In February 1793, he became an alférez, which is a junior officer rank. He fought in the War of the Pyrenees against France. This war was led by General Antonio Ricardos.

In May 1794, he was promoted to lieutenant alférez. He was hurt during the Battle of the Black Mountain in November of that year. By 1796, he became a full lieutenant.

Fighting in the Peninsular War

Later, Milans del Bosch took part in the Peninsular War, which lasted from 1807 to 1814. During this war, he led special mountain troops called the Migueletes. These were irregular soldiers from the regions of Catalonia and Valencia. They were very good at fighting in the mountains.

After Spain gained its independence and King Ferdinand VII returned to power, Milans del Bosch supported the liberals. Liberals believed in more freedom and less power for the king.

Political Actions and Exile

In 1817, Milans del Bosch and another general, Luis de Lacy, tried to openly challenge the government. This type of challenge is called a pronunciamento. It is different from a secret coup d'êtat because it is an open declaration against the government.

General Lacy was quickly arrested and sentenced to death. This forced Milans del Bosch to run away. He hid in the Pyrénées-Orientales mountains. From there, he tried several times to remove the Spanish government from power. French authorities arrested him in Laroque-des-Albères on 3 June 1829, near the Spanish border.

Milans del Bosch tried one last time to start a rebellion in a place called Empordà in 1830, but it did not succeed.

Francisco Milans del Bosch's grandson, Joaquín Milans del Bosch, also became a high-ranking officer in the Spanish Army.
