Early Life and Education
Francisco Morales Bermúdez was born in Lima, Peru, on October 4, 1921. His father, Remigio Morales Bermúdez, was an Army Colonel. Francisco went to Colegio Inmaculada in Lima for most of his schooling.
In 1939, he joined the Escuela Militar de Chorrillos, which is a military school. After graduating, he became an important member of the Center for Advanced Military Studies.
Start of His Political Career
Morales Bermúdez became a brigadier general in the army. His first political job was in 1968. He was appointed as the Minister of Economy and Finance. This was during the government of Fernando Belaúnde Terry. He left this job after two months due to problems within the government.
Later in 1968, a military group took over the government. General Juan Velasco led this new military government. He asked Morales Bermúdez to return as the Minister of Economy and Finance. In 1974, Morales Bermúdez left this role again. This time, he was made the Commander-in-Chief of the Peruvian Army. In 1975, he became both Velasco's prime minister and the minister of war.
His Time as President (1975-1980)
President Velasco's health was getting worse. So, Morales Bermúdez led a military change and became the President of Peru on August 29, 1975. He guided the country through some very difficult economic times.
His government changed the direction of the Peruvian Revolution. It moved away from some of the earlier revolutionary ideas. During his time, a housing problem also started. This led to a period known as the "Lost Decade" in Peru. Morales Bermúdez faced pressure from many sides. He found it hard to make successful political and economic changes.
In 1978, a special group called the Constituent Assembly was formed. This group created a new constitution for Peru. It replaced the older 1933 Constitution. After elections were held in 1980, Morales Bermúdez gave power back to a civilian government. This government was led by President Fernando Belaúnde. This marked the end of 12 years of military rule in Peru.
After His Presidency
After leaving office, Morales Bermúdez mostly stayed out of the public eye in Peruvian politics. He sometimes gave speeches about the Peruvian army.
In 1985, he tried to become president again. However, he did not get many votes and was unsuccessful.
In 2021, when he was 99 years old, Morales Bermúdez was one of many former military officials who signed a letter. This letter was about the 2021 presidential election. The Ministry of Defense of Peru quickly stated that this letter did not represent the views of the Armed Forces.
Morales Bermúdez turned 100 years old on October 4, 2021. He passed away in a hospital in Lima on July 14, 2022.
