A Leader in the Americas
Francisco Pérez de Valenzuela became a strong leader for the Spanish Crown. He was appointed as a military and navy captain in the Viceroyalty of Peru. This was a very large area in the Americas controlled by Spain. He fought in several important battles, helping Spain expand its power.
Protecting Valdivia
Later in his life, Francisco became a politician. He was chosen to be the Corregidor of Valdivia. This job was like being the mayor of the city. Valdivia was a port city in Chile. It was founded by another famous Spanish explorer, Pedro de Valdivia.
Francisco did a great job protecting Valdivia and other southern cities. He also guarded the forts and ports from attacks. He was especially good at stopping pirates who tried to raid the coast.
