Francisco de Alava y Nureña was a Spanish official who lived around the late 1500s and early 1600s. He is known for briefly serving as the temporary governor of Chile in the 1620s.

Who Was Francisco de Alava y Nureña?

Francisco de Alava y Nureña was born around 1567. He was related by marriage to Pedro Osores de Ulloa, who was the Royal Governor of Chile. This connection was important for his future role.

Becoming Governor of Chile

In September 1624, Governor Pedro Osores de Ulloa became very ill. Before he died, he chose Francisco de Alava y Nureña to take his place. This made Alava the temporary governor of the Captaincy General of Chile. The Captaincy General was a large area that was part of the Spanish Empire.

His Short Time in Charge

News of Governor Osores' death and Alava's temporary appointment soon reached the Viceroy of Peru. The Viceroy was Diego Fernández de Córdoba, Marquis of Guadalcázar. The Viceroy was a very powerful leader in the Spanish colonies. He decided to appoint his own nephew, Luis Fernández de Córdoba y Arce, as the new governor of Chile. The Viceroy hoped his nephew would show off his military skills in the War of Arauco. This war was a long conflict between the Spanish and the Mapuche people in Chile.

What Happened Next?

In May 1625, Luis Fernández de Córdoba y Arce arrived in Chile. He took over from Francisco de Alava y Nureña. So, Alava's time as governor was very short, lasting less than a year.
