Francisco de Becerra was a brave Spanish captain who lived in the 1500s. He was born in Medellín, Spain, in a region called Extremadura. He served in the Spanish Army and was part of the exciting, yet challenging, time when Spain was exploring and settling new lands. These lands were often called the "New World." Sadly, he died during a journey in what is now Brazil.

Francisco de Becerra's Life
Early Years
Francisco de Becerra was born in Extremadura, Spain, sometime in the 1510s. This was a period when many Spanish explorers and soldiers were sailing across the oceans. They were looking for new trade routes and new territories.
A Journey to the New World
In the year 1550, Captain Becerra was given an important job. He was the commander of a type of sailing ship called a brigantine. This ship was carrying a woman named Mencía Calderón on a long voyage. On this trip, Captain Becerra was joined by his wife, Isabel. She was the daughter of a person named Álvaro Contreras y Carvajal.
Shipwreck and Survival
During this very same journey, a terrible event happened. Captain Becerra's ship was caught in a shipwreck off the coast of Mbiazá, which is in present-day Brazil. Sadly, Francisco de Becerra lost his life in this accident. However, his wife, Isabel, and their children were fortunate. They managed to survive the shipwreck.
