Diego de Benavides, 8th Count of Santisteban, Francisco's father, was also a Viceroy.

Francisco IV de Benavides y Dávila came from a powerful Spanish family. His mother was Antonia Dávila y Corella, who was the 10th Countess of Cocentaina. Noble Titles and Honors

The title of Count of Santisteban del Puerto was first given by King Henry IV of Castile in 1473. Francisco IV, as the 9th Count, received a very special honor called Grandee of Spain from King Charles II of Spain in 1696. This title meant he was one of the highest-ranking nobles in the country.

Later, Francisco's son, Manuel de Benavides y Aragon, became the 10th Count. In 1738, King Philip V of Spain made Manuel the 1st Duke of Santisteban del Puerto. This was to reward Manuel for his help as a Spanish Army Brigadier in battles across Europe, especially in Italy, Sicily, and Naples.

Francisco IV married Francisca Josefa de Aragón y Sandoval. She was born in Lucena, Córdoba, Spain, in 1647 and passed away in 1697. They had many children together, about 18 in total.
