Who Was Francisco de Moncada?
Francisco de Moncada y Cardona came from a very important family. His father was Juan de Moncada y de Tolça, who was the 1st Count of Aitona. His mother was Ana de Cardona, whose father was Fernando Ramon Folch, 2nd Duke of Cardona. This meant Francisco was connected to some of the most powerful families in Spain.
Becoming a Count and Marquis
In 1574, Francisco became the 9th Count of Osona. He also received the title of Grandee of Spain. A Grandee was a very special noble title, given by the King. It meant you were among the highest-ranking nobles in the country.
Later, in October 1581, King Philip II of Spain gave Francisco's family an even higher title. Their land, which was a "County," became a "Marquisate." This meant Francisco was now the 1st Marquis of Aitona. A Marquisate was a more important noble territory than a County.
Serving as Viceroy
Francisco de Moncada also served as a Viceroy. A Viceroy was like a governor or a representative of the King in a specific region. They had a lot of power and helped the King rule different parts of the kingdom.
He was the Viceroy of Catalonia from 1580 to 1581. After that, he became the Viceroy of Valencia in 1581 and held this important job until he passed away.
His Family Life
Francisco de Moncada married a woman named Lucrecia Gralla. She was the lady of Subirat and Esponella. Together, they had a very large family with 17 children!
Two of their notable children were:
- Gastón, who took over his father's titles and lands.
- Juan de Moncada, who became an Archbishop in Tarragona, a high position in the church.
