What Was Frank?
Frank was a "former settlement," which means it was once a small community where people lived and worked, but it no longer exists as an active town today. It was a quiet place in the beautiful natural area of Humboldt County.
The McKee Family's Role
A very important family in Frank was the McKee family. Frank H. McKee, Sr., was a key person in the community. The settlement was even named "Frank" in his honor.
Mail Services and More
From 1892 to 1903, Frank had its own post office. This post office was special because it was located right inside the McKee family's home. A post office is where people send and receive letters and packages. Frank H. McKee, Sr., was the very first postmaster, meaning he was in charge of the post office.
Learning at Home
Besides running the post office, Frank McKee and his wife, Arabelle, who was known as "Belle," also used their home as a school. This meant that children in the small community could get their education right there. It was common for homes to serve many purposes in small, developing settlements.
Why Did Frank Disappear?
Many small settlements like Frank eventually disappear. This can happen for several reasons. Sometimes, people move to bigger towns for more opportunities. Roads might change, or new services might become available elsewhere. Frank's post office closed in 1903, which often signals the end of a small community's services.
