Frank G. Cousins, Jr. was born on May 7, 1958, in Boston, Massachusetts. He is an American politician who served as the Essex County, Massachusetts Sheriff. Cousins made history when he became the first African-American sheriff in Massachusetts. This happened in 1996 when he was chosen for the job by the governor at the time, William Weld.
Before becoming sheriff, Frank Cousins was involved in local government. He served on the City Council in Newburyport, Massachusetts. After that, he was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 1993 until 1996. He is a member of the Republican party. Even though Essex County usually votes for the Democratic party, Cousins won elections for sheriff three times. He won in 1998, 2004, and 2010. He decided not to run for reelection in 2016.
