Captain Frank Godfrey was a brave English pilot during World War I. He was known as a "flying ace" because he shot down 12 enemy planes. All of his victories were against German fighter aircraft.

Who Was Frank Godfrey?
Frank Godfrey was born in Godalming, England, on August 16, 1889. After finishing school, he worked as an accountant. He also helped his local town leader, called an alderman. He did these jobs from 1902 until 1914.
Joining the Army
Frank Godfrey joined the British Army on April 13, 1915. He became an officer, starting as a second lieutenant. He served with a group called the 18th Battalion of the Duke of Cambridge's Own (Middlesex Regiment). This group was known as "Pioneers."
He was promoted to captain on March 17, 1916. Later, he moved to the Royal Flying Corps. This was the air force of Britain at the time. He became an "observer officer" on April 27, 1918. This meant he would fly in planes and help spot enemies.
Flying High in World War I
On March 3, 1918, Godfrey joined the 20 Squadron. He flew as an observer and gunner in Bristol F.2 Fighter planes. His job was to operate the machine guns in the back of the plane.
He flew with Captain Thomas Percy Middleton. Together, they achieved many victories. They shot down two enemy planes on April 17, May 3, and May 8, 1918. Godfrey scored five more wins in June. His last victory was on July 29, 1918. He shot down a German Fokker D.VII plane.
In total, he destroyed ten German fighter planes. He also forced two others to crash. He returned to Britain on September 22, 1918.
Earning a Special Award
Frank Godfrey received a special award in August 1918. It was called the Distinguished Flying Cross. This award is given for bravery while flying.

- He has always been a skilled and brave pilot.
After the War
Captain Frank Godfrey left the military on April 25, 1919.
