Frank Jordan (born February 20, 1935) is an American politician. He used to be a police chief. He served as the mayor of San Francisco from 1992 to 1996. He is a member of the Democratic Party.

Frank Jordan's Early Life and Education
Frank Jordan was born in San Francisco in 1935. He finished high school at Sacred Heart Cathedral Preparatory High School in 1953. While working as a police officer, he studied political science and government. He earned his degree from the University of San Francisco in 1975.
Police Career and Chief of Police
Before becoming mayor, Frank Jordan had a long career in the police force. He joined the San Francisco Police Department in 1957. In 1986, Mayor Dianne Feinstein chose him to be the Chief of Police. He served as Chief until 1990. He then left his police job to run for mayor.
Becoming Mayor of San Francisco
Frank Jordan became the Mayor of San Francisco in 1992. He took over from Art Agnos. He served one term as mayor, until 1996.
During his time as mayor, Jordan worked on several important projects:
- He helped turn the Presidio Army Base into a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. This is a large national park.
- He helped bring the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) train system to the San Francisco International Airport. This made it easier for people to travel.
- He played a role in keeping the San Francisco Giants baseball team in the city.
- He worked to make sure the city's budget was balanced. This means the city spent about the same amount of money it took in.
Jordan also continued a campaign against a group called Food Not Bombs. He also started a program called Matrix. This program aimed to help with the city's homelessness issues.
In the 1995 mayoral election, Frank Jordan ran for mayor again. He faced Willie Brown. Brown was a very powerful politician. Jordan and Brown were the top two candidates. They went into a second round of voting, called a run-off election. Willie Brown won this election.
Frank Jordan tried to become mayor again in the 1999 mayoral election. However, he came in third place. Willie Brown won that election too.
Life After Being Mayor
Since 2001, Frank Jordan has worked as a special advisor. He advises the president of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. This foundation gives money to many causes. Jordan helps them decide where to give money in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2007, the foundation gave nearly $53 million to projects in this area.
Frank Jordan's Personal Life
Frank Jordan has a degree in government and political science. He earned it from the University of San Francisco. He has also been part of the university's Business Advisory Council since 1989. He also has teaching credentials from the University of California.
Before 2017, Frank Jordan and his wife, Wendy Paskin-Jordan, owned two homes. One was in the Pacific Heights area of San Francisco. The other was in Santa Rosa, California. Sadly, their Santa Rosa home was destroyed in the October 2017 Northern California wildfires.
