Frank Joseph Guarini Jr. (born August 20, 1924) is an American politician from New Jersey. He was a member of the Democratic Party. He served in the United States House of Representatives for 14 years, from 1979 to 1993.
Frank Guarini is of Italian background. As of August 2023, he is the oldest living former U.S. Representative. He turned 100 years old on August 20, 2024.
Early Life and School
Frank Guarini was born on August 20, 1924. His parents were Frank Joseph Guarini Sr. and Caroline Critelli. He finished Lincoln High School in 1942.
He joined the United States Navy and served on the ship USS Mount McKinley. This was during World War II, from 1944 to 1946.
After the war, Guarini went to college. He earned a degree from Dartmouth College in 1947. He then studied law at New York University School of Law. He received his law degree in 1950 and another advanced law degree in 1955. He also studied international law in the Netherlands. In 1951, he became a lawyer in New Jersey. He started his law practice in Jersey City, New Jersey.
Political Career
Frank Guarini began his political career in the New Jersey Senate. He served there from 1965 to 1972. In 1970, he tried to become a U.S. Senator but did not win.
Serving in Congress
In 1978, Guarini was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He represented New Jersey's 14th Congressional District. He was a Democrat.
He was re-elected six more times, serving a total of seven terms. He decided to retire from Congress in 1993. After he left, Bob Menendez took over the area he represented, though the district number changed.
Legacy and Recognition
Frank Guarini has been honored in many ways. The post office building in Jersey City is named after him. It is located at the corner of Montgomery and Washington streets.
Several universities have also recognized him:
- John Cabot University in Rome, Italy, named its campus the Frank J. Guarini campus.
- The library at New Jersey City University is named in his honor.
- His old college, Dartmouth College, created the Frank J. Guarini Institute for International Education. This was to thank him for his support. In 2018, Dartmouth also named its graduate school the Guarini School of Graduate and Advanced Studies.
- New York University School of Law, where he studied, named two centers after him. The Guarini Center focuses on environmental and land policy. The Guarini Institute focuses on global law.
In 2014, Guarini received the America Award from the Italy–USA Foundation.
