Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Frank Kramer (born November 23, 1905 – died July 10, 1993) was an American artist. He was famous for drawing pictures for books, especially the Oz books. He illustrated two Oz books by Jack Snow: The Magical Mimics in Oz and The Shaggy Man of Oz. These books continued the popular Oz stories first written by L. Frank Baum.

Kramer also drew pictures for other books. He worked on Solution Unsatisfactory by Robert A. Heinlein. He also illustrated Twelve Around the World by Maureen Daly. Many of his drawings appeared in sports novels for kids by Caary Paul Jackson, including the Bud Baker series.

For a long time, not much was known about Frank Kramer. There was a short biography in Jack Snow's book Who's Who in Oz (1954), but it had a wrong birth date. Later, in 2011, a magazine called The Baum Bugle published articles about his life and work.

Jack Snow mentioned that Kramer was born in New York City and lived in Brooklyn. He was a big fan of the Brooklyn Dodgers baseball team. Kramer used to be a businessman, but he decided to become a freelance artist instead. His art was featured in magazines like Street & Smith. Jack Snow noticed Kramer's special talent for imaginative drawings, especially in his sports artwork.

Frank Kramer's Life

In 1938, Frank Kramer married Alice Aichele. They did not have any children.
