Frank Ormsby facts for kids

Francis Arthur Ormsby (born in 1947) is a talented author and poet from Northern Ireland. He is known for writing many books of poetry and for helping other poets share their work.

Early Life and Education

Frank Ormsby was born in a town called Irvinestown in County Fermanagh. He went to school at St Michael's College, Enniskillen. Later, he studied at Queen's University Belfast, which is a well-known university.

After finishing his studies, Frank Ormsby became a teacher. From 1976 until he retired in 2010, he was the Head of English at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution. This means he was in charge of the English department and helped many students learn about literature and writing.

His Work as a Writer

Frank Ormsby has been writing for over 50 years! During this time, he has published ten books filled with his own poems. He has also helped other writers by putting together ten different collections of poetry.

He was also an editor for a long time. From 1969 to 1989, he was the editor of a magazine called The Honest Ulsterman. An editor chooses which poems and stories get published. He also edited another important magazine called Poetry Ireland Review.

In 2019, Frank Ormsby was given a very special job: he was named the Ireland Professor of Poetry. This is a big honor for a poet. He held this important role for three years, working with three major universities: Trinity College Dublin, Queen's University Belfast, and University College Dublin.

Awards and Recognition

Frank Ormsby has received several awards for his amazing poetry:

• In 2002, he won the Lawrence O’Shaughnessy Award for Poetry from the University of Saint Thomas in the USA.
• In 1992, he received the Cultural Traditions Award. This award was given in memory of another famous writer, John Harold Hewitt.
