Early Life and Police Work
Frank Stamp joined the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary in 1925. He was 20 years old at the time. People knew him as a kind and gentle officer. Children in the community loved to follow him on his police beat. They would chat and play with him. Sometimes, he would even give them a sweet treat!
Boxing Career
Frank Stamp was also a very talented boxer. He became a light heavyweight champion. He fought many of the best boxers in his weight class. He competed in both Canada and the United States.
In 1930, he left the police force for a short time. He went to Boston to focus on his professional boxing career. While there, he joined Jack Sharkey's Camp. After two years, he returned home. He then rejoined the police force. Frank was known for his strong right punch. He often used his boxing skills to stop trouble.
Family Life
Frank Stamp married Phyllis Young in 1935. Sadly, Phyllis passed away in 1942. She was still very young. Frank then became a single parent. He raised their daughter, Anita, who was four years old at the time. Anita was 18 when her father passed away.
A Hero Remembered
Frank Stamp died suddenly on May 27, 1954. He was working at the police station. He had just finished chasing and arresting two American servicemen. They had caused trouble in St. John's. One of them had thrown a rock. It hit Frank in the forehead.
Many people in St. John's still tell stories about Frank Stamp. He was a respected police officer and a great boxer. His memory lives on.
On September 25, 2005, Frank Stamp was honored. His name was carved onto the National Police and Peace Officers Memorial. This memorial is located on Parliament Hill in Ottawa. It remembers police officers who have served their communities.
