Frank Stewart's Life Story
Frank Stewart was born in 1949 in Nashville, Tennessee. He grew up in Memphis and Chicago. When he was just 14, he took his first photo. This was at the historic March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.
For most of his career, Frank has been a documentary photographer. This means he takes pictures to show real life and events. He received money from the National Endowment for the Arts. This helped him travel across the country. He photographed African American communities.
In 1977, Frank was part of a special group. They were the first journalists allowed into Communist Cuba. He also worked closely with artist Romare Bearden. Frank photographed Bearden at home and in his studio. This was from 1975 until Bearden passed away in 1988.
The Olympic Committee invited Frank to be their official photographer. This was for the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. In 2005, he joined the Kamoinge Workshop. This is a group of African-American photographers in New York. They traveled to New Orleans to photograph the damage. This was after Hurricane Katrina. Frank also taught photography at SUNY Purchase. He was also a helper for the National Urban League.
Capturing Jazz Music
Frank Stewart is best known for his jazz photographs. He started his career touring with jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal. This was in the mid-1970s. For almost 50 years, he has photographed many famous jazz musicians. These include Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, and Wynton Marsalis. Frank Stewart was also the main photographer for Jazz at Lincoln Center.
