Frank Stuart Spring (born 1907, died 1997) was an important British scientist. He was an organic chemist, which means he studied chemicals found in living things. He was also a member of important science groups like the Royal Society of London.

A Scientist's Journey

Frank Spring was born in Great Crosby, England, on September 5, 1907. He was one of six children. He went to Waterloo Grammar School in Great Crosby.

When Frank was young, his father, who was a ship captain, sadly died. His ship hit a German mine in the North Sea. Because of this, Frank received money from a special fund to help him go to university.

He studied Chemistry at Liverpool University. He earned his first degree in 1928. He then continued his studies and got a PhD in 1930. A PhD is a very high degree that shows you are an expert in your field.

In 1930, Frank started working at the University of Manchester. He taught Chemistry there. By 1946, he became a Senior Lecturer. Later that year, he moved to Glasgow to become a Professor of Chemistry.

Frank was recognized for his important work. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1952. This is a big honor for scientists in the UK. He also became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1958.

In 1959, he decided to leave university work. He became a director at a company called Laporte Industries in Luton. He worked there until he retired in 1971.

Frank Spring passed away on March 1, 1997, when he was 89 years old.

In 1932, Frank Spring married Mary Mackintosh. They lived in Heswall. Frank and Mary had two children, a son named John and a daughter named Vivien.
