A Glimpse into Franklin's Past
Franklin was named after Benjamin Franklin. He was a very famous American who helped create the United States. He was a writer, scientist, inventor, and politician.
A brave US Marine named Michael Strank grew up in Franklin. He was one of the soldiers in the famous photo Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima. This picture shows Marines raising the American flag during a big battle in World War II.
Where is Franklin Located?
Franklin is in the southwestern part of Cambria County. It sits in the valley of the Little Conemaugh River. This river forms the edge of the borough on one side. Across the river are the towns of East Conemaugh and a small part of Johnstown.
The borough covers about 1.5 square kilometers (0.6 square miles). A small part of this area, about 0.04 square kilometers, is water.
