The Franklin B. Hough House is a special old house in Lowville, New York. It was built a long time ago, in 1860-1861. This house was once the home of a very important person named Franklin Hough. He is often called the "father of American forestry." This means he was one of the first people to really care about protecting our forests.
Franklin Hough was a doctor, scientist, and historian. He became the first leader of the Division of Forestry. This group later grew into the United States Forest Service. Because of its history, the house was named a National Historic Landmark in 1963. It was also added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.
About the Franklin B. Hough House
The Franklin B. Hough House is in a neighborhood in Lowville. It sits on Collins Street. The house is set back from the road. You can reach it by a curved driveway.
The house is two-and-a-half stories tall. It is made of brick. The roof is flat on top with sloped sides. In the middle of the roof, there is a small tower called a belvedere. This tower also has a sloped roof. The front of the house has five window sections. The middle section sticks out a bit. Most windows have decorative arches above them.
The History of the House and Franklin Hough
The house was finished in 1861. Franklin Hough lived here from 1863 to 1865. He was one of the first people in the United States to worry about the health of our forests. He noticed that wood products were becoming harder to find in New York during the 1850s and 1860s.
In 1876, Franklin Hough was chosen for a big job. He became the first person in the federal government to look after the nation's forests. The group he started eventually became the United States Forest Service. This agency still protects our forests today. Hough's family owned the house until 1967.
