The Franklin Harbor Marine Park is a special protected area in Spencer Gulf, South Australia. It was created to help protect the amazing sea life and beautiful natural areas of Franklin Harbor. This marine park is right next to, and even overlaps with, the Franklin Harbor Conservation Park.

About Franklin Harbor Marine Park

This marine park is located on the western side of Spencer Gulf. It stretches between Gibbon Point and the Munyaroo Conservation Park. The nearby town of Cowell is the closest community to the park. The park was officially established on January 29, 2009.

Protecting Marine Life

The Franklin Harbor Marine Park is divided into different zones. These zones help manage how people use the park. Some areas are called "sanctuary zones." In these zones, fishing and other activities that might disturb animals are not allowed. This helps protect the most sensitive parts of the marine environment.

Most of the park allows for fun activities. You can enjoy recreational fishing here. You can also use non-motorized boats, like kayaks or canoes. This means you can explore the waters while still being kind to nature.

Amazing Wildlife

The park is home to many different kinds of animals. In the sanctuary zones, you might spot some incredible creatures.

  • King George whiting: These are popular fish known for their tasty meat.
  • Sea dragons: These beautiful and unique fish look like floating seaweed.
  • Other fish and invertebrates: Many other types of fish and sea creatures without backbones live here.
  • Australian sea lions: These playful marine mammals can sometimes be seen resting or swimming.
  • Migratory birds: Many different bird species visit the park. They use it as a resting or feeding stop during their long journeys.

Special Purpose Areas

Within the park, there are two "Special Purpose Areas." These areas have a specific use. They allow for the movement of large amounts of goods between ships. This process is called "transshipment." These areas are used to export grain from Lucky Bay. This helps local farmers send their crops to other places.
