František Chvostek (born May 21, 1835 – died November 16, 1884) was an important doctor from the Austrian Empire. He worked for the army and is best known for discovering something called Chvostek's sign in 1876. This sign helps doctors understand certain health conditions.

Early Life and Education

František Chvostek was born in a place called Frýdek-Místek, which was part of Moravia at the time. He was very dedicated to his studies.

He went to a special school for military doctors called the Josephs Academy. In 1861, he earned his doctor's degree there.

Medical Career

After finishing his studies, Chvostek started working at a military hospital in Vienna. He stayed there until 1863.

From 1863 to 1867, he worked as an assistant to another well-known doctor named Adalbert Duchek. Chvostek also taught at the Josephs Academy. Between 1868 and 1871, he gave lessons on electrotherapy. This was a new way of using electricity to help treat illnesses.

In 1871, František Chvostek became the head of a medical clinic that belonged to Dr. Duchek. He led this clinic until the Josephs Academy closed in 1874.

After the academy closed, Chvostek continued his important work. He became the chief of the internal medicine department at the military hospital. He also helped teach military courses. He worked hard until he passed away in Vienna in 1884. By then, he had become a high-ranking military doctor and a professor.
