What is Fraser Like?

Fraser is not a typical town with many shops or homes. It mostly has buildings for people who work there. These include:

  • A border crossing station where people check passports and goods. This is run by the Canada Border Services Agency.
  • A camp for workers who maintain the highway for the Yukon government.
  • A small power plant that uses water to make electricity. This is called a micro-hydro project.

The homes in Fraser are rented out to the people who work for customs and on the highway. For phone and internet, Fraser uses the same system as Carcross, Yukon. This means it shares the same area code 867.

How to Say "Fraser"

People who live nearby and in the Yukon usually say Fraser like "FRAY-zer". But people from Skagway, Alaska say it a bit differently, more like "FRAY-zher".

Fraser's Past and Present

For a long time, Fraser was an important stop on the White Pass and Yukon Route railway. This railway used to carry goods and people. However, after the trains started using diesel engines, Fraser became less important for daily train operations.

Today, the railway still uses Fraser, but mostly for tourists! Visitors can ride a special train to Fraser. From there, they can switch to a bus to continue their journey. Sometimes, Fraser is also used as a base for fixing parts of the railway further north.
