Fraser Point is a piece of land that extends into the sea. It is found on the northern coast of Laurie Island. This island is part of the South Orkney Islands in Antarctica. Explorers first mapped Fraser Point in 1903 during the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition. Later, Captain Petter Sorlle mapped it again in 1912–1913. In 1933, people from the Discovery Investigations on the ship Discovery II re-mapped the area. They named it after Francis C. Fraser.

Fraser Point: A Special Home for Penguins

Fraser Point is a very important place for birds. A large area of 36 hectares (about 89 acres) has been named an Important Bird Area (IBA). An IBA is a place that is key for bird populations. BirdLife International gives this special title to areas around the world.

Why This Area is Important for Birds

The ice-free land at Fraser Point includes the eastern shore of Marr Bay and the western shore of Mackintosh Cove. This specific spot is home to a huge breeding colony of chinstrap penguins. There are about 11,000 pairs of these penguins that live and raise their young here. This makes Fraser Point a vital place for these amazing birds to survive and thrive.
