Early Life and Education
Fred Koe grew up in Aklavik. His father, Jim Koe, was the chief of the Aklavik Indian Band, which is a First Nations group. When Fred was 11 years old, he had to attend a residential school in Inuvik. This meant he was sent away from his family to go to school, which was a common experience for many Indigenous children at that time due to the Canadian Indian residential school system.
Political Career
In 1991, Fred Koe decided to run for a seat in the Northwest Territories Legislature. This is like being elected to a government body that makes laws for the territory. He ran in the Inuvik area, which is called an electoral district.
Serving as an MLA
Fred Koe won the election in 1991. He defeated Glenna Hansen, who later became a Commissioner of the Northwest Territories. As an elected member, he was known as a Member of the Legislative Assembly, or MLA. He served for one term.
After His Term
In the next election in 1995, Fred Koe ran again but was not re-elected. He was defeated by Floyd Roland.
Life After Politics
After leaving politics, Fred Koe continued to work in important roles. He became the president of the Northwest Territories Development Corporation. This organization helps with economic growth and business in the territory.
Current Activities
Today, Fred Koe lives in Whitehorse, Yukon. He is a member of the board of directors for the First Nations Bank of Canada. This bank helps support First Nations communities and businesses. He also serves on the board of the Da Daghay Development Corporation.
Family and Curling
Fred Koe is a father to several well-known curlers. His son, Kevin Koe, is a World champion curler. His other children are Jamie Koe and Kerry Koe-Galusha. Jamie and Kerry were born when the family lived in Yellowknife. Fred even played curling with Jamie and Kerry in the 1999 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship.
