Fred Koe's Early Life
Fred is the son of Jim Koe, who was a chief of the Aklavik Indian Band. Fred grew up in Aklavik and later moved to Inuvik. When he was 11 years old, he attended a school in Inuvik, which meant he had to live away from his family.
Becoming a Politician
Fred Koe decided to run for a seat in the Northwest Territories Legislature in the 1991 Northwest Territories general election. He successfully won the election for the Inuvik area. He won against Glenna Hansen, who later became a Commissioner. Fred served one term, but he was defeated in the next election in 1995 Northwest Territories general election by Floyd Roland.
Life After Politics
After his time as a politician, Fred Koe became the president of the Northwest Territories Development Corporation. This company helps businesses grow in the North. Today, Fred lives in Whitehorse, Yukon. He is a member of the board of directors for the First Nations Bank of Canada and the Da Daghay Development Corporation. These roles involve helping with important financial and development decisions.
A Family of Curlers
Fred Koe is the father of three well-known curlers. His son, Kevin Koe, is a World champion curler. His other children are Jamie Koe and Kerry Koe-Galusha. Jamie and Kerry were born when the family lived in Yellowknife. Fred even played curling with Jamie and Kerry in the 1999 Canadian Mixed Curling Championship.
