Glenna F. Hansen was an important leader in Canada's Northwest Territories. She was born on August 10, 1956. Glenna Hansen is an Inuvialuk person, which means she is part of the Inuit people who live in the western Canadian Arctic. She served as the Commissioner of the Northwest Territories from 2000 to 2005. This is a very special role, like being the head of the territory.
Growing Up in the North
Glenna F. Hansen was born in a place called Aklavik, which is in the Northwest Territories of Canada. When she was older, in 1991, she started working for a company called David Storr and Sons Contracting Ltd. She began as an assistant, helping with important tasks. By 1996, she had worked her way up to become the general manager of the company. This means she was in charge of running the business.
Becoming a Commissioner
On March 31, 2000, Glenna Hansen was chosen for a very important job. She became the 14th Commissioner of the Northwest Territories. This role is like being the official leader of the territory. She was also the 24th person to hold a similar top position since 1870. She served as Commissioner for about five years, until April 29, 2005.
Trying for Political Office
Before becoming Commissioner, Glenna Hansen also tried to become a member of the Northwest Territories Legislature. This is like being an elected representative who helps make laws for the territory.
In 1999, she ran in an election for the area called Inuvik Twin Lakes. She didn't win that election, but she was appointed Commissioner a few months later.
Later, in 2011, she ran for election again in the Mackenzie Delta area. Many people were running in that election because the person who held the seat before was not running again. Glenna Hansen finished in fifth place in that race.
