Leading the Arctic Red River Community
Before becoming a politician, Frederick Blake Jr. was a leader, or Chief, for the Arctic Red River Band. This means he helped guide and represent his community. He also served as the Gwich'in Chief in Tsiigehtchic.
Frederick Blake Jr.'s Political Journey
Frederick Blake Jr. started his political journey in the 2011 election for the Northwest Territories. He ran to represent the Mackenzie Delta area. Many people wanted this job because the previous leader, David Krutko, was stepping down.
Frederick Blake Jr. won his first term. He beat four other people, including Glenna Hansen, who used to be a high-ranking official in the Northwest Territories.
Helping with Transportation
In 2013, Frederick Blake Jr. asked the Minister of Transportation, Dave Ramsay, about a ferry. He wanted to know if a larger ferry, the M.V. Merv Hardie, could be used at Tsiigehtchic. This bigger ferry had just finished working at Fort Providence. He hoped it could replace the smaller MV Louis Cardinal ferry.
