Frederick Montague, 1st Baron Amwell (born October 8, 1876 – died October 15, 1966) was a British politician. He was a member of the Labour Party. He was also awarded the CBE, which is a special honor from the King or Queen.

Frederick Montague started his life in Holborn, Middlesex. He was born to John Montague and Mary Ann Manderson. As a young person, he worked as a newsboy and a shop assistant. Later, he became a copywriter, which means he wrote advertisements. He also worked as a political agent, helping politicians with their campaigns.

Early Life and War Service

Frederick Montague served in the First World War. He was a Lieutenant in the 1st Battalion of the Northamptonshire Regiment. A lieutenant is an officer rank in the army. After the war, he continued to serve his community.

Becoming a Politician

After the war, Frederick Montague became an Alderman for the Islington Council. An alderman is a senior member of a local council. He held this position from 1919 to 1925.

In 1923, he was elected to the House of Commons. This is where laws are made in the United Kingdom. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Islington West. He was an MP from 1923 to 1931, and then again from 1935 to 1947.

Roles in Government

Frederick Montague held important jobs in the government. From 1927 to 1931, he worked under Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald. He was the Under-Secretary of State for Air. This role meant he helped manage matters related to the Royal Air Force.

During Winston Churchill's war government, he also held key positions. From 1940 to 1941, he was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Transport. This job involved helping with transportation during wartime. Then, from 1941 to 1942, he was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Aircraft Production. In this role, he helped with making airplanes for the war effort.

In 1946, he received the CBE honor. In 1947, he was given the title of Baron Amwell. This meant he became a member of the House of Lords, which is another part of the UK Parliament.

Family and Later Life

Lord Amwell married Constance Mary Craig in 1911. They had one son and two daughters. Lady Amwell passed away in 1964. Frederick Montague, 1st Baron Amwell, died two years later in October 1966, at the age of 90. His son, Frederick, took over his title as the next Baron Amwell.

A Magician's Touch

Beyond politics, Frederick Montague had a fun hobby. He was a very keen magician! He even served as a vice-president of London's Magicians' Club. He also wrote a book about magic tricks called Westminster Wizardry.
