Frederick Goldie was an important Scottish Anglican bishop. He was born on September 1, 1914, and passed away on October 23, 1980.

Frederick Goldie's Early Life and Education

Frederick Goldie was born in Glasgow, Scotland. His parents were John and Maria Goldie. He went to Hatfield College, Durham, where he earned several degrees. He also studied at the Edinburgh Theological College and the University of Edinburgh. These studies helped him prepare for a life in the church.

His Work in the Church

Frederick Goldie became a deacon in 1938 and a priest in 1939. The Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway ordained him.

Early Roles

He worked as a curate at the Good Shepherd Church in Hillington from 1938 to 1946. A curate is like an assistant to the main priest. After that, he became the main priest, called a rector, at the same church until 1949.

He also served as a priest at Ascension Church in Glasgow for a few years. In 1949, he became the rector of St Augustine's Church in Dumbarton.

Teaching and Leadership

Besides his church duties, Goldie was a lecturer at the Edinburgh Theological College. He taught there from 1940 until 1963. In 1963, he became the Dean of Glasgow and Galloway. This is a senior leadership role in the church. He also served as rector of St Margaret's Church until 1974.

Becoming a Bishop

In 1974, Frederick Goldie was chosen to be the Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway. He was officially made a bishop on November 22, 1974, at St Mary's Cathedral, Glasgow. He was known as a historian of the church. He continued to serve as bishop until he passed away.
