The Frederick K. Stearns House is a special old home located at 8109 East Jefferson Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. It stands right next to another important building, the Arthur M. Parker House. This house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. This means it is officially recognized as a historically important building in the United States.
What Does the House Look Like?
The Frederick K. Stearns House has two and a half stories. It was built using a material called hollow tile. This type of tile has empty spaces inside, which can help with insulation.
The house has a gabled roof. This means the roof has two sloping sides that meet at a ridge, forming a triangle at each end. Its outer walls are stuccoed, which means they are covered with a special plaster. The house also features half-timber designs. This style shows wooden beams on the outside walls with the spaces between them filled with other materials.
The house looks a bit like buildings from medieval times. This old-fashioned feel comes from its different-sized windows. It also has several parts that stick out, called projecting bays. The wide roof surfaces also add to its unique look.
Why Is This House Important?
This house is important for a few reasons. First, it was built for Frederick K. Stearns. He was the son of the person who started a big medicine company. Frederick K. Stearns himself was the president of this company from 1887 to 1921. The company also built the Frederick Stearns Building, which is another famous building on Jefferson Avenue.
Second, the house is important because of its beautiful design. It shows off a mix of medieval and Arts and Crafts styles. The Arts and Crafts movement was a design style popular around the early 1900s. It focused on simple forms, local materials, and traditional craftsmanship.
Today, the Frederick K. Stearns House has been updated. It is now used as office space. As of 2008, some of the groups that have offices there include the Detroit-Wayne County Port Authority and Friends of Belle Isle.
