Frederick Luke was a very brave English soldier. He was born on September 29, 1895. He earned the Victoria Cross. This is the highest award for bravery. It is given to soldiers in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth. He showed incredible courage during World War I.

Frederick Luke: A War Hero
Frederick Luke was a young soldier. He was only 18 years old. He was a Driver in the 37th Battery. This was part of the Royal Field Artillery. He served during the First World War.
His Amazing Bravery
On August 26, 1914, something incredible happened. It was in a place called Le Cateau, France. A captain from his battery tried to save two big guns. These guns had been captured by the enemy. Frederick Luke and another driver, Job Henry Charles Drain, volunteered to help.
They worked together under heavy enemy fire. The enemy soldiers were very close. They were only about 100 yards away. Despite the danger, Frederick and Job helped save one of the guns. For this brave action, Frederick Luke received the Victoria Cross.
Later Life and Legacy
Frederick Luke continued to serve. He later became a sergeant. He also served during World War II. During this war, he was a ground gunner. He worked with the Royal Air Force.
He was a true living legend. Shortly before he passed away, he was a special guest. He visited the 93 Le Cateau Field Battery. Members of the battery were amazed to meet him. For many years, he was listed in the Guinness Book of World Records. He was known as the oldest living holder of the Victoria Cross. He passed away on March 12, 1983.

Frederick Luke's Victoria Cross medal is on display. You can see it at the Imperial War Museum in London. It is in the Lord Ashcroft Gallery.
