Frederick Wilding (born November 20, 1852 – died July 5, 1945) was a talented athlete from New Zealand. He was known for playing first-class cricket for the Canterbury cricket team. He also played tennis and was a very good all-around sportsman. Frederick Wilding was also a successful lawyer and the father of two famous children.

Early Life and Education

Frederick Wilding was born in Montgomery, Wales, in 1852. His father, John Powell Wilding, was a surgeon. Frederick went to school at Hereford Cathedral School and Shrewsbury School in England. After his studies, he became a lawyer in 1874.

He was a well-known athlete in the western part of England. In June 1879, he married Julia Anthony. Her father was once the mayor of Hereford. Later that same year, Frederick and Julia moved from England to New Zealand.

Life and Achievements in New Zealand

In New Zealand, Frederick Wilding became a very successful lawyer in Christchurch. In 1913, he was given the special title of King's Counsel. This title is given to experienced lawyers who are highly respected.

Frederick and Julia's home in Christchurch, called "Fownhope," had two tennis courts. One was for winter play and the other for summer. Frederick loved tennis so much that he started Wilding Park. Today, this is the biggest tennis center in Canterbury, New Zealand. He also won the New Zealand Championships doubles tennis title five times. He won these titles between 1887 and 1894 with his tennis partner, Richard Harman.

A Family of Achievers

Frederick Wilding had two very famous children. His son, Tony Wilding, became a world champion tennis player. Tony also played cricket for Canterbury, just like his father. Sadly, Tony was killed while serving in the First World War.

His daughter, Cora Wilding, was an artist and loved being outdoors. She founded the Youth Hostel Association of New Zealand in 1932. This organization helps young people explore New Zealand by providing affordable places to stay.

Frederick Wilding passed away in Christchurch on July 5, 1945, when he was 92 years old. He was buried at Bromley Cemetery.
