Early Life and Education
Frederick Wilding was born in Montgomery, Wales, in 1852. His father, John Powell Wilding, was a surgeon. Frederick went to school at Hereford Cathedral School and Shrewsbury School in England. After his studies, he became a lawyer in 1874.
He was a well-known athlete in the western part of England. In June 1879, he married Julia Anthony. Her father was once the mayor of Hereford. Later that same year, Frederick and Julia moved from England to New Zealand.

Frederick and Julia's home in Christchurch, called "Fownhope," had two tennis courts. One was for winter play and the other for summer. Frederick loved tennis so much that he started Wilding Park. Today, this is the biggest tennis center in Canterbury, New Zealand. He also won the New Zealand Championships doubles tennis title five times.
