Frederick William Franz (born September 12, 1893 – died December 22, 1992) was an important leader among Jehovah's Witnesses. He was a member of their main leadership group, called the Governing Body of Jehovah's Witnesses. In 1977, he became the president of the Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society of Pennsylvania. This organization helps manage the work of Jehovah's Witnesses around the world. Before becoming president, he was the vice-president from 1945 to 1977. He remained president until he passed away in 1992.
Early Life and Learning
Frederick William Franz was born on September 12, 1893, in Covington, Kentucky. When he was a child, he attended different churches, including Lutheran and Catholic services. Later, he went to the Presbyterian Church.
He finished high school at Woodward High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1911. After that, he went to the University of Cincinnati. There, he studied different subjects like liberal arts and ancient Greek, which is also known as biblical Greek. He hoped to become a Presbyterian preacher. Mr. Franz was very good at languages. He knew German and could read Latin and Greek. As he got older, he taught himself Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Hebrew.
His Work and Contributions
Frederick Franz became interested in the Bible Students after reading a booklet called Where are the Dead? He then studied the writings of Charles Taze Russell, who was an early leader of the Bible Students. Mr. Franz was baptized as a Bible Student on April 5, 1914.
In 1920, he started working at the Watch Tower headquarters in Brooklyn, New York. By 1926, he joined the team that wrote and edited publications for the organization. He was a Bible researcher and writer. After Joseph Franklin Rutherford, who was the president of the Watch Tower Society, passed away, Mr. Franz became the head of the writing department. In 1945, he became the vice-president of the Watch Tower Society.
Frederick Franz was known as a leading Bible scholar and writer for the organization. He played a big part in creating the New World Translation of the Bible, which is a Bible translation used by Jehovah's Witnesses. He continued to write for the Watch Tower Society until he died in 1992. After his death, Milton G. Henschel became the new president of the Watch Tower Society.
