About Fredrik Åkesson

Fredrik Åkesson started playing guitar when he was 12 years old. He was inspired by famous guitarists like Michael Schenker and Yngwie Malmsteen.

In 1992, when Fredrik was 19, he joined the band Talisman. He played with them for almost four years and recorded five albums. After that, he wanted to play heavier music.

Fredrik then formed a new band called Eyeball with some friends. They later changed their name to Southpaw. In 1998, Fredrik played on Southpaw's first album. He also appeared on an album called Naïve by the band Clockwise.

Returning to Talisman and Other Projects

Fredrik later returned to Talisman. They released two more studio albums, Cats and Dogs in 2003 and 7 in 2006. They also released a live album called Five Men Live.

In 2004, Fredrik helped out the band Tiamat on tour. He also played on an album called Night Church with the band Sabbtail.

On May 17, 2007, the band Opeth announced that Fredrik Åkesson would be their new guitarist. His first tour with Opeth was the Progressive Nation Tour.

Fredrik's first album with Opeth was Watershed, released in 2008. He helped write the song "Porcelain Heart" on that album. He also co-wrote the song "Pyre" for Opeth's album Heritage, which came out in 2011.

In 2018, Fredrik played a guitar solo on a song called "Arcana Imperii" for the musician Ihsahn.

Gear and Endorsements

An endorsement is when a musician uses a certain brand of equipment, and the company supports them. Fredrik Åkesson used to have an endorsement with ESP Guitars. He even had his own special guitar model from them.

After joining Opeth, Fredrik started using PRS Guitars and Marshall JVM 410 amplifiers. Later, in 2009, he switched to Blackstar Amplification. He also uses a special effects processor called Axe FX. In 2012, Fredrik changed his amplifier endorsement to Marshall amps again. In 2011, PRS guitars made a special signature model just for him.
