A Guitarist's Journey
Fredrik Åkesson started playing the guitar when he was only 12 years old. He was inspired by amazing guitarists like Michael Schenker, Yngwie Malmsteen, and Gary Moore.
In 1992, when he was 19, Åkesson joined the band Talisman. The band's founder, Marcel Jacob, needed a new guitarist and chose Åkesson after holding auditions. He played with Talisman for almost four years and recorded five albums with them.
After leaving Talisman, he wanted to play heavier music. He formed a band called Eyeball with some other musicians, which later became known as Southpaw. In 1998, he was busy and appeared on two different albums: Southpaw's first album and an album called Naïve by the band Clockwise.
Returning to Talisman and Other Projects
Åkesson later rejoined Talisman to record more albums and go on tour. They released two more studio albums, Cats and Dogs in 2003 and 7 in 2006. They also released a live album and a DVD.
During this time, Åkesson was also involved with other bands. In 2004, he toured with the band Tiamat as a temporary guitarist. He also played with the melodic death metal band Arch Enemy from 2005 to 2007. He filled in for their guitarist Christopher Amott, who took a break from the band.
Joining the Band Opeth
A big moment in Åkesson's career came on May 17, 2007. The famous progressive death metal band Opeth announced that he was their new guitarist, replacing Peter Lindgren.
His first tour with Opeth was the Progressive Nation Tour, where they played alongside bands like Dream Theater. The first album he recorded with Opeth was Watershed in 2008. He even helped write the song "Porcelain Heart" with the band's leader, Mikael Åkerfeldt.
Since then, Åkesson has been a key member of Opeth, recording many more successful albums with them. He also helped write the song "Pyre" on their 2011 album, Heritage.
Guitars and Equipment
Like many professional musicians, Åkesson has deals with guitar companies, which is called an endorsement. For a while, he used ESP Guitars and even had his own special signature model.
When he joined Opeth, he started using PRS Guitars. If you watch the music video for the song "Porcelain Heart," you can see him playing a PRS guitar. In 2011, PRS created a special signature guitar just for him. He has also used amplifiers from brands like Marshall and Blackstar to create his powerful sound.
