Free Willy 3: The Rescue is a family film from 1997. It was directed by Sam Pillsbury. The main actors are Jason James Richter and August Schellenberg. This movie is the third one in the Free Willy series. It's also the last film in the original story and the last one shown in movie theaters.

The Story of Free Willy 3
Jesse, who is now sixteen, works on a research ship called the Noah. He studies orcas, also known as killer whales. His old friend Randolph works with him. They think that Willy and his family of orcas are being hunted illegally. Some people are pretending to be regular fishermen, but they are actually whalers.
A Dangerous Hunt Begins
On a ship called the Botany Bay, ten-year-old Max Wesley goes to sea for the first time. His father, John, comes from a long line of whalers. Max soon learns that his family's business is against the law. During his first hunt, Max accidentally falls into the water. He comes face to face with Willy, the famous orca.
After this, Max decides to help Willy. He teams up with Jesse and Randolph. They want to stop the whalers from selling whale meat illegally. Jesse introduces Max to Willy properly. Jesse learns that Max likes whales and wants to help them.
Working Together to Save Whales
Jesse tells his boss about the danger to the whales. But his boss won't do anything without proof. So, Jesse and Max work together to get the evidence needed.
Jesse manages to sneak onto the Botany Bay. He steals a sample of the harpoons used to hunt whales. He also finds out that the whalers are going after Willy's family again. They are using a special trick: an audio recording of a song Jesse plays on his harmonica. Willy will think it's Jesse and swim closer, but it will be too late.
Jesse's boss plans to call for help the next day. But Jesse knows that will be too late. So, Jesse, Randolph, and their friend Drew decide to act fast. They take the Noah research boat to chase after the whalers themselves.
The Big Rescue
Max helps them by jumping into the water. This makes the whalers stop to rescue him, giving Jesse and his friends more time to catch up. John, Max's father, is very angry. He realizes his son is not on his side. He also thinks Max tried to break their ship's engine, but it was actually Jesse.
Jesse, Randolph, and Drew try to make the whalers stop using a flare gun and their boat's speaker. When that doesn't work, Jesse rams the Botany Bay with the Noah. This causes the whalers' harpoon to miss Willy. It also knocks John, Max's father, into the water.
Willy tries to attack John, but Jesse and Max convince Willy to stop. Then, John gets caught under a net and almost drowns. He comes face to face with Willy again. This time, Willy does not hurt him. Instead, Willy saves John by pushing him to the surface. Jesse and Randolph then rescue John.
The Marine Patrol arrives. Jesse had called them on the radio before ramming the ship. They catch the whalers and arrest them. Being saved by Willy makes John understand that he was wrong about whales. He apologizes to Max. John isn't sure what he will do next, as whaling was his whole life. But Max tells him he is his father and forgives him.
A New Family Member
Later, Jesse, Randolph, Drew, and Max see something amazing. Willy's son is born! The mother is an orca named Nicky. Max thinks about naming the baby after Willy. But Jesse suggests naming the new calf Max, after him. The film ends with Willy, his family, and the rest of the orca pod swimming freely into the open sea.
